Planning the Perfect Proposal - Creative Ideas to Pop the Question

Proposing is one of life’s most thrilling and nerve-wracking moments. Whether you’re envisioning an intimate setting or a grand public gesture, the key is creating a proposal that reflects your unique love story. We spoke with Jessica Harden of La Maison d’Or, a celebrated Ottawa jeweller, to gather tips, insights, and creative ideas for planning the perfect proposal.

Proposal Considerations

When planning a proposal, Jessica suggests focusing on the elements that matter most to you and your partner. The ring is important, but it doesn’t have to be extravagant.

“If a ring pop feels right, then that’s the right move,” she says.

Thoughtful planning should also include selecting a meaningful location, deciding on your words, capturing the moment, and celebrating afterwards.

Location is another crucial element. Consider whether your partner would prefer a public or private proposal. Do they enjoy intimate settings, or are they drawn to grand gestures? Is there a spot that holds sentimental value in your relationship, or would they want to celebrate with family or friends immediately after the big moment?

Public or Private?

Choosing between a public or private proposal comes down to your personality as a couple. A private proposal offers intimacy and allows both of you to feel comfortable expressing your emotions, especially if you’re both more introverted. A public proposal, on the other hand, can be exciting and memorable if you enjoy grand, show-stopping moments—think a stadium proposal or a flash mob.

No matter the setting, consider your partner’s preferences. Would they want to look their best for the occasion? Jessica suggests enlisting a friend to take them for a spa day or providing a decoy reason for getting dressed up. And don’t forget to plan for a celebratory moment immediately afterwards—perhaps a hidden bottle of champagne for a toast or a planned photo session to capture the joy.

Creative Proposal Ideas

Over the years, Jessica has seen clients pull off some truly unique and heartfelt proposals. From a simple yet moving backyard picnic during the pandemic to a horse-and-buggy ride through Ottawa with roses and a photographer, creativity knows no bounds.

Some go all out with elaborate productions, like the client who created a spy-themed movie trailer featuring the ring, which played in a movie theatre before the film started. Another memorable proposal involved a custom escape room designed to reveal the ring, live-streamed to family members waiting at a nearby restaurant.

Even small, meaningful gestures can have a big impact. Jessica recalls a client who proposed using a custom Funko Pop figurine, tying the moment to a shared hobby.

Involving Family and Friends

Family and friends can add to the joy of your proposal, but Jessica advises involving them thoughtfully to maintain the intimacy of the moment. Some ways to include loved ones are by having them take photos or videos discreetly or planning a surprise celebration after the proposal. Be selective about who knows the details beforehand to avoid unintentional spoilers.

The Role of Sentimentality

Incorporating sentimental locations or elements into your proposal adds a personal touch. Whether it’s where you had your first date, a favourite vacation spot, or something tied to a shared interest, these choices make the moment all the more special.

Symbolism and connection are at the heart of memorable proposals, and photos taken in meaningful locations often become cherished keepsakes.

Enhance the Moment with Technology

Technology can be a great way to make your proposal unique and ensure the moment is captured. Some couples live-stream their proposals so distant family members can witness the event, while others integrate videos or digital elements into the experience. Jessica notes that creativity with technology can enhance your story, but what truly matters is focusing on the connection between you and your partner.

Managing Nerves

Proposing can be nerve-wracking, but Jessica has some sage advice: take a breath.

“You have time. Let your partner soak it all in—there’s no need to rush,” she says.

Timing can also help manage nerves. For example, if you’re on a trip, consider proposing early so you can relax and spend the rest of your time together celebrating your engagement.

Finally, remember to smile. Jessica notes that many proposal stories begin with, “They were acting so strange,” because of nervous energy. Staying present in the moment will help you enjoy it more and make it memorable for both of you.

The perfect proposal doesn’t have to be grand or complicated—it just needs to reflect your love story. Whether it’s a quiet picnic or a theatrical production, the most important thing is to create a moment that feels authentic to your relationship.
