Can guys wear engagement rings?

Can guys wear engagement rings? Absolutely. Anyone can wear an engagement ring.

An engagement ring is a symbol of love, commitment, and the decision to build a life together. There is no reason that symbol has to belong to women alone.

At La Maison d’Or, we have helped men choose engagement rings in a variety of different styles—from substantial signet-inspired rings and wider diamond bands to more traditional engagement-ring designs.

From our side of the counter, the most useful question is not, “What is a man supposed to wear?”

It is:

“What would he actually love wearing?”

Once you start there, the possibilities become much more interesting.

What Does a Man’s Engagement Ring Look Like?

There is no single answer.

Some men prefer a simple band with more width and weight on the hand.

Others like a signet-style design with a diamond incorporated into the face of the ring.

A wider diamond band can also work beautifully if he wants something substantial while still making the diamond an obvious part of the design.

And some men prefer what many people think of as a more traditional engagement ring—a distinct center diamond, a defined setting, and more visual emphasis on the stone.

These are all choices we’ve seen our clients make.

The ring does not need to fit into a category first.

It needs to fit the person wearing it.

Start With the Way He Already Wears Jewelry

When someone comes into La Maison d’Or looking for an engagement ring, no matter the gender, one of the first things we notice is what they already feel comfortable wearing.

  • Do they wear rings now?

  • A watch?

  • Mostly yellow gold, white metal, or mixed metals?

  • Do they like pieces with some visual weight, or something understated?

Those details give us a much stronger starting point than trying to choose a ring according to gender alone.

For someone who already likes substantial jewelry, we may place a wider band or signet-style ring on the hand first.

For someone who gravitates toward cleaner, finer pieces, we may begin with a slimmer profile.

And if his eye goes immediately to a traditional diamond engagement ring, we follow that direction.

Signet-Style Engagement Rings

A signet-inspired ring is one of the options we often show when someone wants an engagement ring with a broader, more architectural presence.

The top of the ring gives us room to work with proportion and diamond placement in several ways.

The diamond might be:

  • Set flush into the surface

  • Positioned prominently at the center

  • Surrounded by smaller diamonds

  • Incorporated into a custom geometric design

  • Paired with engraving or another personal detail

The result can feel substantial and refined while still reading clearly as a special ring.

For someone who already loves signet rings, it can be a very natural way to translate that style into an engagement piece.

Wider Diamond Bands Can Be Engagement Rings Too

A wider diamond band is another direction we see work particularly well.

Instead of building the entire design around one elevated center stone, the diamonds become part of the architecture of the band itself.

That may mean a row of diamonds across the top, several larger stones, or a custom arrangement designed around the width of the ring.

This style can give you significant diamond presence while keeping the silhouette lower and broader.

It also feels very natural on someone who prefers a substantial ring rather than a delicate setting.

Can a Guy Wear a Traditional Diamond Engagement Ring?

Yes.

And our customers have.

If he loves the look of a center diamond, there is no reason to redesign the entire concept simply because he is a man.

An oval, round, emerald-cut, cushion, or any other diamond shape can all become the center of the ring.

From there, we can adjust the proportions around him.

Perhaps the band is slightly wider.

Maybe the setting has more visual weight.

Or perhaps he loves the traditional proportions exactly as they are.

This is where trying rings on becomes especially useful.

Sometimes what someone assumes they will prefer and what immediately feels right on the hand are two different things.

We would rather let the ring itself answer the question.

How Do You Choose the Right Style?

At the counter, we would usually explore three things first:

What We Look At

What It Helps Us Decide

His existing jewelry

Metal, weight, and overall aesthetic

What feels right on his hand

Width, scale, and proportion

How prominently he wants the diamond to show

Signet, band, or center-stone direction

Then we start trying things on.

Preferences tend to become much clearer this way.

You may discover that he wants the diamond to be subtle within the design.

Or the opposite: he may love seeing a distinct center stone immediately.

There is no hierarchy between those choices.

They simply create different expressions of the same idea.

Can Both Partners Wear Engagement Rings?

Of course.

Some couples want both people to have a physical symbol of the engagement.

The rings do not have to match.

They can simply relate to each other.

  • Perhaps both use the same gold.

  • Maybe each ring incorporates a diamond.

  • You could repeat one small design element, an engraving, or a particular finish.

  • Or the two engagement rings can be completely individual.

What connects them is the meaning behind them.

A Detail We Often Consider

If both partners will eventually wear wedding bands as well, it is worth thinking about the engagement ring and wedding ring together.

Would he like to stack them?

Wear them separately?

Move the engagement ring to another hand after the wedding?

Those preferences can influence width, profile, and overall design.

Thinking about that early allows the engagement ring to work beautifully both now and after the wedding.

What About Custom Engagement Rings for Men?

Custom design opens the possibilities considerably.

A ring can begin with a familiar silhouette—a signet, a wide band, or a traditional diamond ring—and then become much more personal.

You might incorporate:

  • A natural diamond in a specific shape

  • A meaningful engraving

  • A hidden stone

  • A distinctive metal finish

  • A family diamond

  • A design detail shared with his partner’s ring

  • Proportions developed specifically for his hand

At La Maison d’Or, we can start with the way he naturally wears jewelry and build outward from there.

That usually produces a much better ring than beginning with a predetermined idea of what the design is supposed to look like.

Our View at La Maison d’Or

We have been helping Ottawa couples celebrate engagements for generations, and our view is very simple:

If a man wants an engagement ring, he should have one.

It can be a substantial signet-style ring.

A wider diamond band.

A traditional center-stone engagement ring.

Or something custom that does not fit neatly into any category.

We have seen men choose all different styles before, and we have seen how naturally those rings can become part of the engagement once the design reflects the person wearing it.

Come in and try different proportions.

Look at the diamonds.

Put a few very different styles on the hand.

Then pay attention to the one he keeps looking at.

An engagement ring is a symbol of love and commitment.

Who gets to wear one is the easy part:

Anyone who wants to.
